Today we’re throwing open the debate about the monarchy to the floor:
- What is the monarchy for?
- What purpose does the monarchy serve?
- Does Britain really need a monarchy in the 21st century?
- Wouldn’t Britain be served equally well by an elected head of state?
- What’s the point of the monarchy?
Whether your sympathies are republican or royalist we’d like to know what you think, especially if you live in the Suffolk Coastal area. Please add your comments below.

So over to you:
Update 19:14 2/12/2009: Had a couple of responses via Twitter
@SCRepublic I can’t get any further than Edwin Starr’s ‘War’ song going round my head “What is it good for? Absolutely nothing” Headache :S
@SCRepublic I think the monarchy is designed for selling newspapers. There would be nothing left for the tabloids to report on.
Update 11:00:00 3/12/2009: More from Twitter
@SCRepublic The monarchy is there for people to write to when all else fails. People think the Queen cares about us mere mortals.
Thanks guys. Keep ‘em coming – I’ll post more as they come in.

1. To house-sit a whole bunch of very large stately homes.
2. To provide a rich source of embarrassingly old-fashioned views (Prince Philip) or embarrassingly new-fashioned old-fashioned views (Prince Charles) so people can say ‘at least we’re not idiots like them’.
3. We needed to put something on the stamps.
4. To exemplify the dangers of in-breeding.
5. To give politicians a means to present themselves as the guardians of an ancient culture and a whole bunch of discretionary powers that no sane democracy would ever hand over now. (Whoops, that’s real.)
