Suffolk Coastal Republic is a group of local people united in a shared commitment to campaign for:
- a republican constitution;
- the right to a democratic head of state;
- an end to the monarchy.
We are people like you from from all walks of life and all parts of Suffolk Coastal: Aldeburgh, Leiston, Saxmundham, Wickham Market, Framlingham, Woodbridge,Martlesham and Felixstowe.
Our group has no specific affiliation to any political party and encompasses a diversity of political opinion. What we have in common is a passionate belief in a society based on fairness, equality, and accountability and not on hereditary privilege, deference, and secrecy.
As members of Republic, the country’s leading campaign for an elected head of state, we have chosen, not to remain quiet, but:
- to argue that an unelected Head of State who is there by pure accident of birth is unacceptable in a modern country;
- to assert our right to a truly democratic society in which constitutional power lies with the people, not with the “Crown-in-Parliament“;
- to demand a head of state who is democratically elected by the people, who acts for the people, and who is accountable to the people.
Above all, we demand to be citizens, not subjects.
