Take action

WriteIf you believe passionately in the principle of democratic accountability over hereditary privilege, of a democracy based not on a feudal anachronism but on the rights and freedoms of citizens, and that those in power are our servants, not our masters, then you are not alone.  You can be part of the campaign for real democracy by joining us in Suffolk Coastal in our fight for an elected head of state and a republican constitution.

Update, 04/12/2009: Our latest campaign initiative is underway now.  We’re asking our local MPs to support a Motion in Parliament to remove the royal family’s exemption from the Freedom of Information Act.  You can help us.

Follow our local campaign activities:

  • join the Suffolk Coastal Republic group at Republic Action, Republic’s own social networking site, and make contact with other Republic supporters in our area;
  • join our Facebook group and meet other Republican supporters in the Suffolk Coastal area and beyond;
  • follow us on Twitter @screpublic for the latest campaign news in our region;
  • subscribe to our email newsletter for regular updates about new posts on the website, relevant local news stories, and other important information so that you can make the most of your own campaigning activities.
  • meet other like-minded Suffolk Coastal republicans at our regular get-togethers at venues across the region.

Get informed:

  • Have a look at the items in our reading list and familiarise yourself with some of the key issues surrounding the debate for a democratic alternative to an hereditary monarch.

Become part of the UK-wide movement:

  • confirm your commitment to the campaign for an elected head of state by becoming a member of RepublicHere’s why you might want to sign up:

Get involved:

  • sign up to Republic’s Urgent Response Network. Get email alerts about stories on news websites, online petitions, radio phone-ins and other opportunities where you can join in the debate and help to put forward the argument for an elected head of state;
  • write to our local MP, and our county and district councillors to ask them to support our campaign. You can use the online tool writetothem.com. Read this useful guide for ideas and advice;
  • if you feel strongly about an issue relating to the monarchy, write to our local newspaper the East Anglian Daily Times.  To improve your chances of being published, try to limit your letter to fewer than 200 words.  Always include your name and address otherwise your letter will not be considered.  When referring to previous letters or stories make sure to include the date of the original.  You can email your letter eadtletters@eadt.co.uk;
  • invite family, friends and work colleagues to join the campaign.  Together we will make a difference.
