What we believe

Ballot boxWe believe Britain deserves the best possible democracy, one in which we, the people, own, control and take responsibility for our political affairs.  We believe our democracy should be one of popular sovereignty, based on the rights and freedoms of citizens. We believe that the people should be in charge and that those in power should be our servants, not our masters.

We call ourselves a democracy yet we elect less than half our parliament. We get to vote once every four or five years yet, between elections, the government’s power is limitless. Our politicians remain largely unaccountable to those who elect them, political power becomes ever more centralised, and there is an almost total lack of parliamentary control over Prime Ministerial powers. We believe that the fundamental root of most of the problems in our democracy can be traced back to one source: the Crown.

No nation that claims to value democracy can also value an institution based on elitism, exclusive privilege and hereditary public office.  That is why we believe that, no matter what the political and constitutional arguments, it is simply unacceptable for the monarchy to continue. Because we deserve the very best democracy possible, we believe a republican constitution is best for Britain.

We set out the case in more detail here:
